C17 Crime Clips for Wednesday, July 10

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette yesterday, July 9, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Crash, July 9, North Gillette Avenue, GPD

No citations were issued after a 28-year-old woman backed her 2002 Dodge van into a 16-year-old boy’s 2007 Toyota around 9:10 a.m., Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said. The woman was northbound on North Gillette Avenue when she thought a child on a bicycle was signaling to cross the street. She reversed without checking her mirror, colliding with the Toyota and causing over $1,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.

Fraud, July 9, Smithie Court, GPD

A 23-year-old woman called the police around 12:37 p.m. after she was targeted by a warrant scam from someone claiming to represent the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Wasson said. The caller told the woman she had a warrant out for her arrest and she needed to pay a fine. The woman went to the sheriff’s office, where she learned there were no warrants for her. The investigation is ongoing.

DWUI, July 9, 9th Street, GPD

Officers arrested a 37-year-old man for impaired driving after he was stopped for multiple traffic violations on 9th Street and Green Avenue around 12:46 p.m., Wasson said. The man was seen in a 1994 Chevrolet turning onto 9th Street from South Douglas Highway without signaling. The vehicle lacked a driver’s-side mirror and had expired registration. According to the report, the man admitted to recent drug use and was taken into custody after failing field sobriety tests. He was cited for not wearing a seat belt and expired registration.

Death, July 9, 4-J Road, GPD

An investigation is underway into a 60-year-old man found dead on 4-J Road around 5:25 p.m., Wasson said. The man was pronounced deceased soon after arrival of officers, who observed drug paraphernalia in the immediate area. After securing a warrant, officers seized the paraphernalia and drugs, though Wasson declined to specify what drugs were found. No foul play is suspected, but a 37-year-old woman who was there when officers arrived was taken into custody.

Crash, July 9, Lakeway Road, GPD

Officers responded to the report of a motorcycle crash near Lakeway Road and Star Hope Drive at 8:44 p.m., Wasson said. The motorcycle was reported for driving through the area at a high rate of speed without stopping for a stop sign. A 53-year-old man and a female passenger were astride the motorcycle during the crash. The man was transported to the hospital but the woman fled on foot before officers arrived. Per Wasson, the man was charged with driving without a license, no insurance, reckless driving and impaired driving. The woman later responded to the hospital for treatment and couldn’t provide a reason for why she fled. No additional charges were filed.
