Campbell County sheriff’s deputy minorly injured in Interstate 90 crash

(County 17)

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Campbell County sheriff’s deputy was minorly injured Friday night after attempting to stop a vehicle for driving the wrong way on Interstate 90, authorities said Monday morning.

The deputy was operating a Campbell County Sheriff’s Office–owned 2023 Dodge Durango when he located a 2017 Ford Escape reported for driving the wrong way on Interstate 90 around 11:04 p.m. June 28, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said.

Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said the deputy activated his emergency lights but the Ford Escape failed to stop. The deputy attempted to turn around when he was struck by a 2001 Ford Mustang operated by a 22-year-old man.

Both the deputy and the 22-year-old man sustained minor injuries from the crash and both vehicles were towed from the scene, according to agency reports from the Gillette Police Department and CCSO.

Reynolds said the Ford Escape operator, a 63-year-old woman, was following Google Maps and believed she was on a frontage road that would lead her to Interstate 90. After the crash, the woman continued until law enforcement caught up to her and escorted her off the interstate at the Port of Entry. She was not impaired and knew her final destination.

No citations were issued and the deputy completed the rest of his shift, according to Reynolds.
