GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes in and around Gillette over the weekend, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.  

Fraud, June 7, North Heptner Road, CCSO

Deputies were contacted at 1:22 p.m. by a trucking company representative alleging a 33-year-old man stole over $3,000 from the company by falsifying his time cards, Sheriff Scott Matheny said. The trucking company was headquartered in Wisconsin, and the case has been turned over to investigations while jurisdictional questions are answered. 

Fraud, June 7, South Douglas Highway, GPD

Officers responded to a bank on South Douglas Highway to investigate a fraud attempt targeting a 34-year-old woman around 2:26 p.m., according to Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson. The woman was reportedly contacted by a man posing as a Campbell County Sheriff’s deputy who was having her pay money to avoid being arrested for a false warrant regarding jury duty. She pulled $3,500 out of a bank account and deposited it into a Bitcoin kiosk at a local grocery store. She went to withdraw more funds but was spoken to by a 30-year-old woman offering aid. Officers arrived and contacted the man, who refused to provide information and hung up the phone. The investigation is ongoing. 

Drugs, June 8, Highway 50, CCSO

A 32-year-old man was arrested for drug possession following a Highway 50 traffic stop on a red Dodge Ram 1500 around 3:20 p.m., Matheny said. During the stop, a deputy smelled the odor of marijuana, and a subsequent search yielded a glass jar containing 22 grams of suspected marijuana and additional marijuana scattered throughout the vehicle. No charges were filed against the passenger, a 31-year-old woman. 

Unauthorized use, June 8, Country Club Road, GPD

Officers cited a 33-year-old for unauthorized use after she allegedly took a 59-year-old woman’s Ford Mustang without permission from Country Club Road around 7:14 p.m., Wasson said. The 59-year-old woman told officers she had told the 33-year-old woman multiple times that she didn’t have permission to take the vehicle. Officers cited the 33-year-old woman after she returned the vehicle. 

Assault, June 9, South Butler Spaeth Road, GPD

Officers responded to an inn on South Butler Spaeth Road for a report of a 21-year-old man being attacked in the parking lot around 1:53 a.m., Wasson said. The man was reportedly choked to the point of falling unconscious by a 19-year-old man. Two others witnessed the incident, though the report provided on June 10 did not specify why the altercation occurred and only stated the 21-year-old man was at the inn to pick up a friend. The investigation is ongoing. 

Eluding, June 9, West 2nd Street, CCSO, GPD

Deputies arrested a 32-year-old man for eluding after he reportedly led deputies on a pursuit following an attempted traffic stop on a maroon Jeep near West 2nd Street around 2:31 a.m., Matheny said. The man allegedly failed to stop for deputies who observed him failing to use a turn signal and speeding 42 mph in a posted 30 mph zone. While deputies pursued him, he tried to wave them past him and was followed onto Foothills Boulevard. GPD officers deployed spike strips and deflated all four vehicle tires. The man pulled into the parking lot of a bar and was taken into custody. He was charged with eluding, driving under suspension, failing to maintain a single lane, failing to use a turn signal and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
