GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Monday night escapee from the Volunteers of America facility was located and arrested near Westover Road this afternoon, Campbell County Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said Tuesday.
Jonathan L. Hughes, 33, a VOA inmate serving a sentence for a prior escape, was taken into custody around 1:47 p.m. May 14 after deputies located him west of Westover Road, Reynolds said.
Hughes was reported as an escapee on May 13 around 7:40 p.m. after he reportedly refused to submit to urinalysis and hopped the west fence at the VOA’s Booth Hall on Raymond Street while deputies were en route, according to a report from the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.
Per the Wyoming Department of Corrections, Hughes was sentenced in Campbell County to one to three years in prison on April 24, 2023, for escaping from official detention. He was to be discharged on Oct. 5, 2025, though he had been eligible for parole on June 3, 2024.
According to Reynolds, Hughes was booked into the Campbell County Detention Center on a single charge of escaping from official detention around 2:16 p.m. May 14.
