GILLETTE, Wyo. — After a busy day Tuesday assisting at the scene of the hazmat incident at the Campbell County Courthouse, the Campbell County Fire Department has released a statement further detailing its involvement.
As previously established in coverage of the event, the fire department and GPD responded to the courthouse just after 11 a.m. Tuesday following a report of a potential hazardous material release. The Hazardous Material Response Team, two engines and three chief officers responded, according to the press release.
Fire personnel worked alongside GPD on the scene, preparing for hazmat protocols and establishing an Incident Command structure while GPD secured the scene. The Wyoming Department of Homeland Security also became involved at this point in order to activate personnel.
“A Regional Response Team activation was obtained from the Wyoming Department of Homeland Security. Regional Response Team 1 is a specialized team of highly trained responders hosted by the Campbell County Fire Department and staffed with CCFD personnel,” The press release said.
From the Wyoming National Guard in Cheyenne, the 84th Civil Support Team also received orders to assist the scene due to its advanced equipment for such situations. After its arrival in Gillette, the Civil Support Team and CCFD jointly entered the building twice for sampling and analysis of the suspected hazmat material.
Sampling proved the substance to be negative for both biological and radiological hazards. Additional testing was done to verify there was no hazardous chemicals within the substance, which also came back negative, per the release. As stated in previous press releases from county officials, further details will not be released to the public given the ongoing police investigation into the matter.
