High school trespasser arrested, found with firearm

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A teenage boy was arrested with a firearm Friday afternoon after fleeing from high school officials who reported him for trespassing, according to the Gillette Police Department.

Gillette police were dispatched to Campbell County High School at 12:43 p.m. Feb. 23 when school officials issued a shelter-in-place order upon learning several unauthorized people were trespassing on school grounds, according to Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson.

Two individuals — a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man — were located by a school resource officer. A school principal located a third individual, a 16-year-old boy, who fled on foot toward the school football field, Wasson said.

The boy was located by nearby officers who responded to the call, but he continued to flee despite being ordered to stop and was detained near an apartment complex on East 12th Street, according to Wasson.

Officers located a handgun on the boy and took him into custody for unlawful possession of a firearm, criminal trespass and interference, per Wasson, adding that the other juvenile was released to his parents and the 18-year-old was not arrested.
