GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes that occurred in and around Gillette yesterday, Feb. 20, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.
Crash, Feb. 20, Highway 59, CCSO, Wyoming Highway Patrol
Deputies responded to the intersection of Union Chapel Road and Highway 59 at 7:36 a.m. to assist the Wyoming Highway Patrol following a report of a multi-vehicle collision, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said. A tractor-trailer unit reportedly struck a 2022 Ford Bronco at the intersection and pushed it through the intersection into a fueling station parking lot, where they collided with parked vehicles. Several motorists were transported to the hospital for treatment. Reynolds was not able to provide specific details regarding the drivers as the case is currently active and under investigation by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Fraud, Feb. 20, West Warlow Drive, GPD
A 73-year-old woman called the police at 10:17 a.m. after she fell victim to a year-long scam regarding an unidentified man’s move to Wyoming, Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said. The woman told officers she received a random call from the man in February 2023 and that they had communicated over the next several months. In December, the man requested money from her to help him move to Wyoming. The woman purchased Greendot cards and provided their information to the man. The investigation is ongoing.
Drugs, Feb. 20, Raymond Street, CCSO
A 24-year-old resident of the Volunteers of America facility on Raymond Street was evaluated by emergency medical services after reportedly ingesting spice around 10:51 a.m., Reynolds said. Despite the admission, there was insufficient evidence to warrant a criminal charge and deputies were cleared from the call.
Fraud, Feb. 20, Black Hills Street, CCSO
Officers were contacted by a 45-year-old man on Black Hills Street around 3:57 p.m. who reported being targeted by an Xbox Live scam, Wasson said. The man got a legitimate email from Microsoft to renew his Xbox account. He searched for the customer service contact information and clicked on one of the numbers, at which point he began speaking with a man with a Middle Eastern accent. The man convinced the resident that he had received too much money back in a recent refund and requested $1,350 in Target gift cards. As of Feb. 21, it is unknown if the 45-year-old purchased the gift cards, and the investigation is ongoing.
Intoxication, Feb. 21, Emerson Avenue, GPD
A 26-year-old man was cited for intoxication after he allegedly made a false report stating his vehicle had been stolen and he had been assaulted around 12:11 a.m., Wasson said. When officers arrived, the man admitted the real reason he called was to report a domestic violence incident involving a 27-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman. Those individuals were contacted and while they had argued, they both stated nothing physical had happened. The 26-year-old man was cited and released to his girlfriend.
