Gillette’s Sorensen shines in statewide free throw competition

CASPER, Wyo. — Young basketball players from across the state took part in the Elks Lodge’s annual Wyoming State Hoop Shoot Finals this weekend, and Gillette’s own Payton Sorensen — competing in the 12-13 age group — punched his ticket to the regional finals in Colorado Springs.

Winners were:

  • Girls ages 8–9: Hattie Dearcorn of Sheridan, Lodge #520
  • Boys ages 8–9: Landon Trentacosti of Sheridan, Lodge #520
  • Girls ages 10–11: Layla Hatch of Sheridan, Lodge #520
  • Boys ages 10–11: Danen Oram of Powell, Lodge #2303
  • Girls ages 12–13: Olivia Brogdon of Sheridan, Lodge #520
  • Boys ages 12–13: Payton Sorensen of Gillette, Lodge #282

The regional finals are scheduled for March 16, followed by the national finals in Chicago in April, during which 72 will compete but only six will walk away as Frank Hise National Champions. Regional and national expenses are paid for by the National Elks Foundation.
