Up to an inch of snow possible today as temps continue to fall through week’s end

GILLETTE, Wyo. — While there hasn’t been much in the way of snow accumulation, chances are good some will stick today.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, is calling for an 80% chance for snow today while the mercury struggles to reach a high of 27 degrees. With an east wind of 10–15 mph and gusts as high as 25 mph, windchills will be as low as 5 degrees. Up to about an inch of snow accumulation will be possible with snow showers today, the forecast says.

A 70% chance for snow persists into the night, but less than an inch of new snow accumulation is expected with any activity. Skies will be cloudy, and the low will fall to around 10 degrees. Windchills will be as low as 0 thanks to a 10–15 mph north wind.

Snow chances continue into Friday morning, when there’s a 40% chance through about 11 a.m. Skies will be cloudy, but should gradually clear to become mostly sunny. Don’t expect too much warmth, though, as the high is forecast to max out around 21 degrees. Windchills will be a dangerous minus 4 with a north wind at around 10 mph.

Mostly clear skies are forecast for Friday night. The low will drop to around 6 degrees, but windchills will continue to hover around that minus 4 mark with a northwest wind around 10 mph.

Warmer winter temps return starting Saturday. Here’s the detailed forecast through Wednesday from the NWS in Rapid City:

  • Saturday: Sunny with a high near 39. Skies overnight will remain clear. The low will be near 18.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny with a high of 46. Mostly cloudy conditions expected overnight with a low near 26.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny with a high of 49. The low will be near 29.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny with a high of 54 and a low near 28.
