Ray Leroy Webb

Ray Leroy Webb: 1935 – 2024

Ray passed away peacefully, at his home, in Wright on February 5, 2024 at the age of 88.  He will be remembered by those who knew him as a friendly, caring, funny man who was a friend to everyone he met.

Ray was born on March 29, 1935 in Guymon, Oklahoma in Biggers basement to Harry and Ethel (Batterman) Webb. He was raised on the family farm, raising wheat. On December 11, 1953 Ray enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed on Treasure Island-San Francisco, California when he went home and married the love of his life, Bonnie J. Jacobs on November 10, 1954. Ray continued in the Navy until his honorable discharge on November 1957. Two weeks prior to his discharge their first daughter, Sonja was born.

After Ray’s discharge they moved to Napa, California where he went to work for Kaiser Steel until they had a layoff. He then joined the Air Force on his birthday in 1958, where they were sent to Belleview, Illinois for his basic training. They were later stationed at Bartlesville, Oklahoma, then onto Morocco for two years then back to Clinton, Oklahoma where he was honorably discharged in 1962.

After being discharged they moved back to Guymon, Oklahoma to the farm Ray was raised on. Later they were blessed with two more daughters, Sandra and Shanna. In 1965 the family moved to Elkhart, Kansas where Ray started his business, R. L. Webb Welding. In the 70’s Ray came to Gillette to do a job in the oilfield.  Liking Wyoming, he moved his family here in 1971 and they started a new life.

While here he enjoyed working, family, square dancing, bowling, playing cards and visiting people. In 1990, Ray retired and sold their home in Gillette and moved to their home in Story. While in Story, Ray learned to make cabinets, which led to him making anything made of wood. He could do it all and took such pride in his work. He loved to fish. Especially taking his grandkids and their friends in the dune buggy. He loved to take the RV and camp. In 1995 they started going to Arizona in the winter, where he loved to play billiards. He learned to make wooden bowls, which he excelled at. And getting to know the many people he met. They both enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, flea marketing and sight-seeing.

In 2000, they sold the place in Story and moved to Wright. Ray could not stay retired long and went to work part-time for Karl Bertagnole at Tru-Tech Products in Wright.
