Game and Fish confirms chronic wasting disease in Pinedale Region elk

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Wildlife managers have confirmed another case of chronic wasting disease in Wyoming, this one in the Pinedale Region, according to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

In November, the disease was detected in a Pinedale Region cow elk from Elk Hunt Area 92, which shares a small southern border with Elk Hunt Area 98, where CWD was detected in 2021, per Game and Fish.

The department announces when CWD is found in a new hunt area to ensure hunters are informed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hunters should not consume any animal that is obviously ill or tests positive for CWD.

“Continued monitoring of CWD over time is important to help Game and Fish understand the potential impacts of the disease as well as evaluate future management actions for deer and elk,” the department said in a Dec. 26 release, which says a map of all CWD-endemic areas in the state are available on the Game and Fish website

Per Game and Fish, the disease is 100% fatal to deer, elk and moose that have been infected, and last year the department managed to test over 6,700 samples from these species thanks to hunter submissions.
