GILLETTE, Wyo. — Here is a summary of notable crimes that occurred in and around Gillette yesterday, Nov. 20, obtained through law enforcement reports compiled by the Gillette Police Department and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.
Battery, Nov. 20, Camel Drive, GPD
Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson said that police responded at 1:19 p.m. after a 15-year-old student struck a 16-year-old student in a restroom at Campbell County High School. The 15-year-old was cited for battery. Apparently, the 15-year-old struck the 16-year-old after believing the 16-year-old was talking about him.
Crash with injuries, Nov. 20, 6th Street, GPD
Wasson said officers responded at 3:44 p.m. to 6th Street and Tyler Avenue for a crash. A 50-year-old woman in a 2009 Jeep was attempting to turn east onto 6th Street from the Campbell County Hospital parking lot and was distracted by the sun while a 61-year-old woman in a 2012 Chevy was eastbound on 6th Street, passing the hospital. The two vehicles collided, and damages were over $1,000. EMS took the 61-year-old to the hospital for a possible head injury. The 50-year-old was cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
Theft, Nov. 20, Gillette, GPD
Officers took a report at 7:37 p.m. on an 11-year-old girl who stole a makeup palette from a relative, Wasson said. Officers did not cite the girl because of her age. They sent the report to the county attorney for review.
DUI, Nov. 20, 9th Street, GPD
According to Wasson, officers at 9:07 p.m. observed a 2011 Ford crossing the center line of East 9th Street near Butler-Spaeth Road. The vehicle then began following another vehicle very closely. As officers got behind the Ford, the driver, a 58-year-old woman, abruptly applied the brakes and came to a stop in the middle of 9th Street. Officers made contact with her. They could smell the strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. The woman admitted to drinking before driving. She performed standardized field sobriety tests. She was arrested for driving under the influence and cited for following too closely.
Traffic accident, Nov. 20, Garner Lake Road, CCSO
Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said that deputies responded at 5:39 p.m. to a report of a vehicle-versus-deer crash on the 3300 block of North Garner Lake Road. The vehicle, a 2008 black Dodge Ram 1500, was parked on the shoulder of the road, facing north. The driver, 18, said he was traveling south on the road at about 55 mph when three deer ran out into the middle of the roadway. He tried to maneuver around them, but he struck one with the front of his vehicle. The deer died on impact, and there was more than $1,000 in damages to the truck. The driver said he was wearing his seatbelt. Airbags did not deploy. The driver was not injured. Deputies photographed the vehicle while the man filled out a Wyoming Game and Fish roadkill form so he could legally collect the carcass. A deputy then helped the man load the deer into the truck. A state accident form was also filled out.
