Above-normal temperatures continue today, Sunday; cool front approaches Sunday night

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Gillette may see mild conditions today, but windy conditions are expected Monday as cooler air pushes in, dropping temperatures for Thanksgiving and beyond.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, has forecast a high of 56 today under sunny skies. There will be a southwest breeze of 6 mph, turning to come from the east this afternoon and from the south tonight. Skies tonight will be mostly cloudy as the low falls to 33.


Sunday will also feature above-normal temperatures with a high of 52 under partly sunny skies. Southwest winds of 7–10 mph will turn to come from the north in the afternoon as the front pushes in. Gusts could reach speeds of 17 mph. Sunday night will be breezy and mostly cloudy. The low will fall to 32 as winds come from the northwest at 10–15 mph and increase to 17–22 mph after midnight. Expect gusts as high as 36 mph.

Monday will continue to see those breezy conditions with a northwest wind of 22–30 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph. The sky will be mostly sunny as the high reaches 43. Monday night’s low will drop to around 25. Skies will be partly cloudy, winds will come from the northwest at 8–17 mph and gusts could reach 28 mph.

“It now looks like it will be milder midweek, near average temperatures, but much colder air will likely arrive toward Thanksgiving Day and persist through the holiday weekend. Some light snowfall could also accompany the colder air late next week,” the NWS in Rapid City said in a social media post.

That mild midweek will bring a high of 50 degrees on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Skies will be sunny to mostly sunny. Tuesday night’s low will be around 30, while Wednesday’s will be near 26. As for Thanksgiving, the forecast high is 38 degrees.
