GILLETTE, Wyo. — UW Campbell County Extension’s 4-H and Youth Development Educator Makala Riley said today that her organization presented several awards at a recent banquet.
4-H members, family members and leaders nominated award winners, and the council made the final decisions based on that feedback, Riley said. The Achievement Night Banquet was held Nov. 3 in the Frontier Hall at CAM-PLEX, 1635 Reata Drive, Gillette.
The winners are as follows:
- 2023 Friend of 4-H Business: TCRI
This award is for a business that has supported the 4-H program.
“TCRI has been helping the 4-H Shooting Sports program more than 10 years,” the award announcement summary Riley provided said. “Jesse, Jeff, JD and the rest of the crew are always willing to help out in any way they can. Some of these ways have included: monetary donations, letting us use one of their buildings for a training, helping with and providing the wagon, team and place to decorate for the 4th of July parade and allowing JD the time off to attend the necessary practices & events. This is just a sample of the help they have provided and we would like to recognize them for their continued support of the 4-H Program.”
- 2023 Friend of 4-H Individual: Tracey Archer and Treasure Boller
This award is for an individual or individuals in the community who have supported the 4-H program. They are not enrolled as 4-H leaders.
“Tracey and Treasure go above and beyond in their work as Administrative Assistants of the Campbell County Extension Office,” the summary said. “Their commitment to 4-H shows with all the hard work and dedication that they put into their work. Over the past year, the Extension Office and 4-H have faced multiple vacancies and employees on leave and these ladies stepped up to make sure the 4-H programming continued. Both ladies have a positive attitudes, dependability and supportiveness that has been a huge benefit to our office. They work hard, especially during the busy summer months when 4-H is going the strongest. Having Tracey and Treasure greatly benefits the opportunities available to our 4-H youth. Thank you both for going beyond!”
- 2023 Outstanding Agricultural Leader: Casey and Stephanie Styvar
This award is for enrolled 4-H leaders who work in the agricultural programming of 4-H project areas.
“Casey and Stephanie have a passion for both youth and agriculture,” the sheet said. “Beyond his role as Gillette FFA Advisor, Casey has given time to help 4-H members by teaching beef selection last fall. They help out youth both in their club and within all species of livestock. Both are passionate about youth development and make the extra effort to connect with Campbell County youth.”
- 2023 Outstanding General Leader: Colton and Cassandra Hurley
This award is for enrolled 4-H leaders who work in the static programming of 4-H project areas. Some examples of static programming are cooking, robotics and shooting sports.
“Not only is this couple supportive parents of active 4-H members, they both help with events like shooting sports and coming to 4-H camp,” the sheet said. “Cassandra and Colton have run lines at County Shoot, have been chaperones at 4-H Camp, and this year Cassandra was one of the Nurses at Camp. No matter how busy they are they are willing to pitch in and do whatever is best for the kids every time. They selflessly exemplify all that is great about 4-H and set a great example for the members.”
- 2023 First Year Leader: Steve Taylor
This award is for a 4-H leader who is enrolled for the first time.
“Steve has been a supportive parent in Shooting Sports for the past few years. This past spring, he was able to attend the training with it being held in Campbell County,” the sheet said. “Steve willingly helped in any way he could before he was certified, but after becoming an official leader, he jumped in with both feet to help with running practices and run the Archery line at our Jackpot Shoot. Steve seems to really enjoy working with the kids and appeared to be comfortable and at ease when running a shooting line. Steve has been a nice addition to our team of leaders, and we look forward to watching him grow as a leader in the coming years.”
- 2023 Outstanding Overall Leader: Brad and Kristi Olsen
This award is for enrolled leaders who participate in any or multiple project areas. The awardee should be someone who is a huge supporter of 4-H and the youth in the program in the past year or years.
“These two are a 4-H power couple. For many years, Brad and Kristi have helped out through many areas of the 4-H program. In Shooting Sports, the 21 Butte 4-H Club, Kristi is the Secretary of the 4-H Council. Both are willing to help out whenever asked,” the sheet said. “They donate countless hours to the youth of our program and help provide opportunities for them to grow. Thank you Brad & Kristi for all you do!”
- 2023 Helping Hand Award: Kaylee Terry and Hayden Robinson
This award is for members who have completed their final year in 4-H. They must have achievements that measure above and beyond other members’. Recipients have dedicated many years to the program and given back to younger members.
“Kaylee Terry has grown into an outstanding leader. For the past few years, Kaylee has been active within her club and as a counselor at 4-H Camp. She put her amazing talent to work at 4-H Camp this year as the 4-H Camp Chair. While she did not exhibit at fair this year, Kaylee was a Helping Hand for the swine members and show.
“Hayden Robinson was always willing to help other 4-H members accomplish their projects. For many years, Hayden has been a Helping Hand to her club and within project areas like Cake Decorating and Goats. She is willing to hop in and guide the younger members. Thank you both for being leaders within the program!”
- 2023 Club of the Year: 21 Butte 4-H Club
This is a club that has gone above and beyond with its club business, education or community investment and involvement.
“This year, 21 Butte 4-H Club has consistently been an active club,” the sheet said. “The club has done a wonderful job focusing on community service. They made May Day baskets for the Yes House, letters to military for Easter, everyone brought goodies to take to Sheriff’s office, clean up at an elderly house, blessings in backpack, helping serve the Pioneers Dinner at fair, Salvation Army ringing of the bell, and valentines for seniors and kids with cancer.”
This club will receive a bowling party as their reward for a successful year.
The Agricultural Leader award winners and one of the two Helping Hand award winners were unable to attend the banquet, Riley said.
