GILLETTE, Wyo. — A Campbell County School District bus with passengers crashed on Echeta Road on Wednesday, Nov. 1, after the driver experienced a medical event, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said Thursday.

The driver, a 49-year-old man, was operating a 2011 Thomas northbound on Cook Road around 8:24 a.m. when he lost consciousness due to a medical event with 17 elementary school–age children on board, Reynolds said.

The vehicle left the road, struck a berm, and entered a drainage ditch on the north side of Echeta Road — stopping only when the bus became high-centered, according to Reynolds.

After the crash, the driver could only remember accelerating to 45 mph after picking up students on Cook Road and was transported to Campbell County Health for treatment. All of the passengers were evaluated on scene by Emergency Medical Services and all were taken to school by a second school bus, Reynolds said.

The crashed bus sustained over $1,000 in damages to its front end, undercarriage and possibly engine, per Reynolds, who said the crash also caused hundreds of dollars’ worth of damage to a fence.
