GILLETTE, Wyo. — This morning, Campbell County commissioners honored Gillette Abuse Refuge Foundation’s request to proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The organization has several upcoming events to raise money to support its programming.

From 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 6, GARF will hold a ceremony at Gillette College’s Technical Education Center, 3251 S. 4-J Road, Gillette, to honor the memory of women who were murdered by an intimate partner. Every year, a different county hosts the ceremony for Wyoming’s “Silent Witnesses.” Volunteers will carry silhouettes of Wyoming’s “Silent Witnesses” in a walk that is part of the ceremony. The last time Gillette hosted the event was in 2001.

Community members can also participate in a haunted gingerbread house contest. People can buy a $25 kit from GARF, located at 910 E. 3rd St. Ste I., and show off their Halloween-themed creations at a dinner Oct. 27 in the community room of Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, 804 S. Emerson Ave., Gillette. Dinner attendees will vote for their favorites.

GARF Executive Director Jessica Howard said people who attend the event in costume will receive more voting tickets. More information about that event is available here.

There will also be a comedy show fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 at Boot Hill, 910 N. Gurley Ave., Gillette. More information about that is available here.

Legends, 10800 S. Douglas Hwy, Gillette, will host bingo at 7 p.m. Oct. 18. More information about that event and other GARF events is available here.

Outside the Campbell County courthouse, GARF flags raise awareness of domestic violence. In Wyoming, in one day, 254 domestic violence victims called for help. (Mary Stroka/County 17)
