LARAMIE, Wyo. — Recently graduated Wyoming Cowgirl and cross-country standout Katelyn Mitchem was recently selected as the Mountain West Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, the highest honor the conference can bestow on an athlete.
The award is bestowed annually to one male and one female who best exemplify the term “student athlete” by achieving excellence in academics, athletics and community involvement over the course of their college career.
In addition to athletic achievement, recipients of the Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year Award are required to have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and demonstrate leadership and good character on and off the playing field.
Mitchem graduated in spring 2023 with a degree in Rangeland Ecology and Watershed Management and Environmental Systems Science, doing so with a perfect 4.00 GPA.
Mitchem began her season receiving the Elite 90 Award at the 2022 Cross Country Championships. She finished her collegiate cross-country career by qualifying for the NCAA Championships as an individual competitor.
She also placed fifth at the Mountain West Championships, followed by an impressive 14th-place showing at the West Regional, ultimately placing 143rd in the National Championships.
