Civil Air Patrol to usher in new commander Monday

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Maj. Toni Brown, who has been commander of the Powder River Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol WY069 since April 2019, will make way for a new commander in one of two ceremonies the organization will hold Aug. 7.

The event will take place at the U.S. Army National Guard Armory, 811 Laramie St., Gillette.

Capt. Steve Schofield will become the new commander. The change of command ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. Schofield has been a Civil Air Patrol mission pilot since 2002, according to his résumé. He received the Hometown Heroes Award for Community Service in Civil Air Patrol in 2010. He has been a band director for Campbell County School District since 1995.

At 6:45 p.m., there will be a promotion ceremony. The following cadets, who have earned promotions since March, will be recognized: Xavier Williams, Corbin Gilson, Josiah Sakultarawattn and Quentin Sakultarawattn.

Wyoming Wing Commander H. Ken Johnston, a patent law attorney, will attend the event. Johnston joined Civil Air Patrol in May 1998 and was an instructor pilot, legal officer and inspector general in the Jeffco Senior Squadron in Colorado before he became the Wyoming Wing Inspector General in December 2007. His first term as the Wyoming Wing Commander was from 2013 to 2017. In 2020, he became the Wing’s Flight Standards & Evaluation Officer. He is now in his second term as Wing Commander for the Wyoming Wing. He is also a Civil Air Patrol Mission Pilot, Mission Check Pilot Examiner, Cadet and ROTC Orientation Pilot, and G1000 Check Pilot Examiner. Johnston has received the Gil Robb Wilson Award and is a Level V-rated Civil Air Patrol officer.
