GILLETTE, Wyo. — Gillette police reportedly received three or four calls from someone falsely claiming to work with a Campbell County Sheriff’s Office staff member, Sheriff Scott Matheny said this morning.

The impersonators who made the calls reportedly said that the phone call recipient missed jury duty and threatened the individual that if they don’t pay, they will be arrested, Matheny said.

Several people have received these spam calls in the past year in Gillette.

Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said in August 2022 that while refusal to show up for jury duty is grounds for an individual to be held in contempt of court, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office will not call and attempt to arrest people over the phone or request funds or gift cards.

The Wyoming Attorney General has resources regarding scams here. The office said scam artists are using fake caller ID information to lead Wyomingites to believe that the callers are calling from the State of Wyoming.

“Please remember that you cannot rely on caller ID to verify who is calling you,” the site said. “Also remember to not give or confirm your personal or financial information to someone who calls you unsolicited.”
