Rod Orullian, who came upon the scene shortly after the crash, said that a pickup truck collided into the front of a southbound Dakota bus. The bus traveled through a field before coming to a stop. The bus driver was extracted and life-flighted, and bus passengers were helped to exit through side windows on the bus. A van with a flag that’s required on mine haul roads collected bus passengers. Duffle bags and lunch coolers were being handed out of the bus when passengers climbed out. Orullian heard witnesses reporting to Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers that the pickup was northbound and hit the bus.
