GILLETTE, Wyo. — A tornado watch has been issued for multiple Wyoming counties, according to the National Weather Service.
The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. June 23 for Campbell, Goshen, Natrona, Sheridan, Converse, Johnson, Niobrara, Weston, Crook, Laramie and Platte counties, per the NWS.
According to the weather service, a Tornado Watch is issued when severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area.
“It does not mean that [tornadoes] will occur, it only means they are possible,” the NWS says, adding that severe thunderstorms are defined as those with winds of 58 mph or higher and/or hail 1 inch in diameter or larger.
As of June 23, there is an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms, which means that multiple severe storms are possible, per the NWS.
Primary hazards include hail greater than 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts over 75 mph. Heavy rain may result in localized flooding, the NWS says.
