GILLETTE, Wyo. — Drivers should always ensure loads are secure.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol calls attention to this road safety measure with the special, annual Secure Your Load Day on June 6. Every year, thousands of accidents occur due to unsecured loads on the road, according to a WHP news release. These accidents can lead to severe injuries, property damage and fatalities. The Secure Your Load Day initiative began in 2004.

To help drivers reduce the risk of accidents, the WHP provided in the release the following safety tips for drivers hauling materials:

  • Inspect the vehicle and transported items to ensure they are correctly secured.
  • Use ropes, straps or bungee cords to secure items in place. Ensure the restraints are in good condition and strong enough to hold a load’s weight.
  • Use a tarp or netting to securely transport any open items, like gravel or sand.
  • Avoid overloading.
  • Stop periodically during travel to ensure the load is still secure.

Avoiding accidents helps prevent unnecessary road delays and disruptions.

“We can all contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation system by securing our loads properly,” the release said. “Let’s all do our part to ensure that our roads remain safe for everyone. Remember to secure your load, not just on Secure Your Load Day, but every time you hit the road.”
