GILLETTE, Wyo. — An ordinance intended to remove requirements for private landowners to maintain their private access and parking lots will go before the Gillette City Council on Tuesday for its second reading.
The ordinance seeks to eliminate a provision in the City of Gillette Zoning Code requiring parking lots and public access easements to be maintained by the property owner to prevent deterioration like potholes, crumbling asphalt, concrete or any other surface covering, according to the city.
Currently, the existing zoning code requires city staff to take action when complaints are received for private access and parking lot maintenance matters, per the city, which says the action includes notifications, monitoring, compliance checks and potentially fines for private landowners.
“In an effort to reduce the City of Gillette’s involvement in private access and parking lot maintenance matters, city staff has been requested to propose an ordinance to eliminate the language requiring private citizens maintain access and parking lot areas,” the city says.
The ordinance was approved to go before the council by the City Planning Commission in May 2023. Its first reading was approved by the council on May 16, 2023, per the city.
