VFW, American Legion to hold Memorial Day events

At the direction of the President, Gov. Mark Gordon has ordered the U.S. and State of Wyoming flags be lowered to half-staff at 12:01 a.m. Memorial Day and be returned to full-staff at noon.

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Campbell County will honor and remember veterans on the morning of Memorial Day.

VFW Post 7756 Commander Lee Yake said events will begin at 7 a.m. May 29 at the main gate of Mount Pisgah Cemetery, 804 S. Emerson Ave., Gillette, where VFW Post 7756 will place flags on all veterans’ graves.

American Legion Post 42, located at 200 Rockpile Blvd., Gillette, will host a breakfast at 8 a.m., he said. Most people who attend the breakfast are veterans and their families.

Then, at 11 a.m., American Legion Post 42 and VFW Post 7756 will hold a ceremony at the shelter at the top of the hill at Mount Pisgah Cemetery.

Memorial Day, which was first observed as “Decoration Day,” began after the Civil War, according to a U.S. National Archives and Records Administration article. This day of remembrance is held to honor all those who have died in service to the nation. The Department of Defense’s Defense Casualty Analysis System provides casualty data dating back to the American Revolution.

In the proclamation, President Joe Biden also encouraged service members’ loved ones to post tributes through the Veterans Legacy Memorial, vlm.cem.va.gov, to educate others about the individuals’ lives and contributions.
