GILLETTE, Wyo. — Above-average temperatures are expected in northeast Wyoming, but they may be tempered a bit as thick smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to linger in the atmosphere.
Sturdy high pressure will dominate the area today, and that will help keep skies clear of clouds and shoot the high to around 82 degrees. However, weak flow aloft will do little to push the wildfire smoke away, allowing it to linger with continued visibility and breathing impacts, the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, says.
Winds will come from the south today at 10–14 mph with gusts reaching 21 mph. There’s a 20% chance for an afternoon thunderstorm between 4 and 7 p.m. Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low near 53, according to the forecast.
Tuesday is looking at a similar setup, complete with morning sun, wildfire smoke and a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms. The forecast high is 78, while the low is 56.
Breezier conditions are expected Wednesday along with the high returning to the low 80s. Thunderstorm chances in the afternoon rise to 50% and stay there overnight as the low falls to 54, the forecast says. Thursday will be similar except the high is expected to max out around 74 degrees. Thunderstorm chances continue overnight as the low falls to 52.
Showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday through the weekend, if the forecast holds up.
