GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is awaiting autopsy results for two men found dead Friday morning outside a structure fire along Midland Road.

On Monday, May 22, Sheriff Scott Matheny said an investigator responded at 11:07 a.m. to Midland Road with the Campbell County Fire Department for a fire involving a camper used as a fixed residence. Firefighters kept the fire from extending to a nearby home and provided care for one patient at the scene.

Campbell County Sheriff’s Office investigators found a 57-year-old man outside of the camper with a significant wound to his left shoulder. The man has been identified, but law enforcement is withholding his name at this time.

Investigators also found another man nearby who was “burned beyond recognition,” Matheny said. He appeared to have a gunshot wound to his “facial area.” Due to the extent of his burns, the man has not been positively identified yet, the sheriff said.

Autopsies to determine causes of death are taking place now in Rapid City, South Dakota, where local investigators and the coroner have joined with a forensic pathologist, Matheny said.

The sheriff said investigators believe the incident involved just the two men and there is no further danger to the public.
