Casualties reported following Midland Road fire; investigation ongoing

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Two bodies were found following a camper fire on Midland Road yesterday, authorities said Saturday.

Emergency responders arrived at Midland Road around 11:07 a.m. May 19 and found the camper, which had been serving as a fixed residence, on fire, according to the Campbell County Fire Department.

Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to a nearby residence and the blaze was under control by 11:45 a.m., per the fire department, which added that medical care was provided to one patient on scene.

The fire department says there were two civilian casualties, though Campbell County Sheriff Scott Matheny said it is currently unclear if the two deaths were related to the fire.

“It still is pretty early, too early to say exactly what happened out there,” Matheny said, adding that an arson team has arrived in Gillette to assist in the investigation and that there is no public threat.

Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem will be conducting an autopsy on the bodies to determine the official causes of death, and more information should be made available by the sheriff’s office on Monday, May 22.
