GILLETTE, Wyo. — Campbell County Rockpile Museum will showcase the history and culture of Powder River Basin sheepherders in a festival that will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 5 and 6 in the field below the museum and next to Fire Station No. 1, 106 Rohan Ave., Gillette.
The Second Annual Powder River Basin Sheepherders Festival includes events related to the Basque, Scots and Quechuan/Peruvian history of the region, the event announcement said. Attendees will be able to see several styles of sheepwagons and try various foods.
Director Robert Henning said at the museum’s April 18 board meeting that museum educator Brittney Elsasser is leading the festival and has been able to add a few more components onto what former museum educator Stephen Zacharias put together in the event’s inaugural year. For example, she’s bringing in the Billings Caledonian Pipes and Drums Band. Henning said he understands it’s a 12-piece band.
