GILLETTE, Wyo. — Native artists may now submit up to 10 samples of their work for a shot at receiving $3,000 through the Native Art Fellowship offered by the Wyoming Arts Council.

As of April 13, the application period for the fellowship is open, the WAC says, adding that the program is intended to raise the profiles of Native artists in Wyoming and celebrate their artistry. The award is one of merit based on the artist’s portfolio to honor their work.

Applications will be accepted from artists working in any artistic discipline or medium. Submitted applications will be juried by noted Native artists outside the state, the WAC says. This year, jurors are Karen Ann Hoffman from Wisconsin and Daniel McCoy from New Mexico.

This year, up to two fellowships will be awarded, according to the WAC, which says recipients will also be given support to find a venue to showcase their work.

Artists can submit up to 10 samples of their work that can be a combination of multiple art forms, the WAC says. Every artist looking to submit an application must be an enrolled member or lineal descendant of a federally or state-recognized tribe or Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian.

Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of the applications and cannot be full-time students pursuing high school-, college- or university-related art degrees. Applicants also cannot be affiliated with the WAC.

The deadline to apply is June 9, 2023, per the WAC.
