GILLETTE, Wyo. – School will not be in session today due to winter weather conditions, according to the Campbell County School District.
Northeast Wyoming remains under a winter storm morning as of Feb. 22, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, which says heavy snow will continue to spread across the region today with wind chill values ranging from 25 to 40 degrees below zero.
Additional snow accumulations between six to 13 inches are possible, NWS says, adding that travel could be very difficult to nearly impossible due to widespread blowing snow.
“The dangerously cold wind chills, as low as 35 below zero, could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” according to NWS.
Campbell County schools are the latest closure amidst the winter storm currently impacting much of Wyoming with government offices announcing they too will be closed today, Feb. 22, due to winter weather conditions.
Campbell County governmental offices announced closures late last night, Feb. 21, while the City of Gillette announced similar action earlier that same day with City Administrator Hyun Kim declaring a Level II Snow Emergency advising against non-emergency travel earlier.
It remains the responsibility of the residents to contact their employers to determine if their place of employment is open or closed, according to the city.
Gillette College facilities are also closed due to the storm, according to a Feb. 21 announcement sent to County 17, which states students will need to contact their faculty or Canvas for updates regarding their coursework.
The ongoing winter storm has also resulted in several road closures across the region including westbound I-90 to Buffalo, south Highway 59 to Douglas, south Highway 50 to Reno Junction, Highway 387 from Wright to Midwest, and north Highway 14-16 to Arvada and Buffalo, per the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
While other roadways have not been closed, severe weather impacts are also being reported on eastbound I-90, Highway 51 to Rozet, Highway 450 east of Wright, and North Highway 59 to the Montana border, per WYDOT.
Update: as of 10 a.m. Feb. 22, South Highway 59 to Wright has been reopened but continues to experience severe weather impacts, according to the latest information available from WYDOT.
