Richard Belzer, stand-up comedian and TV detective, dies at 78

NEW YORK — RIchard Belzer — who for decades delighted people across the country as a stand-up comedian and as a star in “Law & Order: SVU” and “Homicide: Life on the Street” — has died at the age of 78.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Belzer died Sunday afternoon at his home in France. The cause of death is unknown, but reports state that Belzer had been dealing with circulatory and respiratory issues.

For more than 20 years, Belzer played the role of quick-witted detective John Munch. First playing the character in 1993, and last playing Munch in 2016, Belzer’s character is one of the most indelible in recent television history.
