GILLETTE, Wyo. — Snow chances will ramp up to 70% today to give Gillette a chance to see up to 2 inches of fresh snow, but skies will clear for the remainder of the week.
Snow chances are brought to the region by a low pressure system tied with a cold front, according to meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota. The area’s best chance for snow will be between 2 and 5 p.m. as snow chances rise from 30% to 70%, despite a high of 38 degrees. With a northwest wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 13 to 18 mph in the afternoon, wind chills are likely to dip as low as 20 degrees. Gusts could reach speeds of 30 mph.
The best chance for snow accumulation will happen overnight, mainly between 1 and 5 a.m. Patchy blowing snow is expected after 4 a.m. Skies will remain mostly cloudy tonight with a low near 20. Wind chills will dip to 3 degrees as winds continue from the northwest at 22 to 31 mph and gusts reach 50 mph.
Thursday will kick off with a 10% chance for snow showers before 7 a.m. Patchy blowing snow is expected through 10 a.m. Mostly cloudy skies will eventually give away to become sunny and help the high reach 28 degrees. However, wind chills will remain in the single digits as winds continue from the northwest at 19 to 24 mph and gusts reach 41 mph.
Thursday night will be mostly clear with a low near 14. Wind chills should hit 0 degrees as winds eventually begin to die down to 9 to 16 mph from the south.
The weekend is shaping up to be warm and sunny, with Friday seeing a high of 38, Saturday a high of 40 and Sunday a high of 37. The warm wave will carry into the work week with a forecast Monday high of 40 degrees.
