GILLETTE, Wyo.- Here is a brief summary of all things crime that happened in and around Gillette over the weekend, obtained through law enforcement reports from the Gillette Police Department (GPD) and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).
Fraud, Jan. 24, Edison Avenue, CCSO
A 20-year-old woman on Edison Avenue called the sheriff’s office around 10:51 a.m. yesterday morning to report she nearly fell victim to a fraud attempt, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said. The woman was contacted by an unknown suspect who said she missed jury duty and needed to pay a fine. The woman paid $450 using a Green Dot card initially but was able to stop the payment after realizing it was a fraud attempt. The woman did not have any monetary losses, and there are no suspects, per Reynolds.
Fraud, Jan. 24, Kluver Road, CCSO
Deputies spoke with a 74-year-old man who said he was contacted by a person claiming to be with “Metropolitan Title” who requested he wire money in order to move up a closing date around 12:41 p.m. yesterday, Reynolds said. The man did not have an account with the company in question and did not send any money.
Breach of peace, Jan. 24, Camel Drive, GPD
Officers responded to Campbell County High School after a 15-year-old boy reportedly became angry when asked to leave a classroom around 12:46 p.m., according to Police Capt. Jason Marcus. School employees attempted to de-escalate the situation and the boy was picked up by his family. He reportedly continued to use profane language and will be ticketed for breach of peace, per Marcus.
Hit and run, Jan. 24, Rampart Drive, CCSO
Staff at the Big D station on Rampart Drive in Wright called the sheriff’s office around 1:02 p.m. to report one of their satellite fuel pumps had been struck by a semi-tractor and the driver left without telling anyone, Reynolds said. Video footage clearly showed a Sysco-owned semi-tractor back into the pump, which will cost around $11,000 to replace. Representatives for Big D had already reached out to Sysco about the incident but also wanted a report documented by the sheriff’s office.
Animal cruelty, Jan. 24, S. Garner Lake Road, GPD
A mastiff was taken into protective custody after officers found it underfed and without food or water on S. Garner Lake Road around 1:18 p.m., Marcus said. The dog had not been fed recently and appeared to have been abandoned.
Burglary, Jan. 24, Wolf Road, GPD
Officers responded to Wolff Road yesterday around 8:06 p.m. after a 33-year-old man called to report someone stole $2,000 worth of items, including a crossbow and tools, from his home, Marcus said. The burglary is believed to have occurred between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Jan. 24. The investigation is ongoing.
