Gillette Walmart to offer free cholesterol screenings, vision products Jan. 14

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Gillette’s Walmart will participate in the chain’s first Walmart Wellness Day of 2023.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 14.

The Gillette store is one of more than 4,600 Walmart pharmacies across the country participating in the quarterly event that encourages families to prioritize their health by not only helping them know and understand their health numbers, but also providing them with tools and resources to seek care and improve and maintain healthy lifestyles, according to a news release from the company. The additional information allows people to make decisions and track progress, the release said.

In Gillette, customers can receive free health screenings for cholesterol and blood glucose, Pharmacist Alex Olson said. A blood pressure cuff will also be available, he said.

“It’s a good way to get free screenings,” he said.

Most insurances also offer free immunizations through Walmart, including for flu, COVID-19, mumps and measles, the company’s news release said.

The pharmacy will also have giveaways, Olson said. In the past, items have included sports drink hydration product samples and homeopathic black elderberry gummies for colds, he said.

Gillette won’t have the vision screenings many other Walmart stores are offering as part of the wellness day because the store doesn’t have the equipment for it, Vision Center Manager Aaron Dey said.

However, customers who stop by the vision center can receive a mystery gift bag, she said. The store will give out about 25 bags, she said. While she doesn’t know what’s inside the bags since she hasn’t opened any, in fall 2022, the kit included cleaning tools, a repair kit and a water bottle.

Dey said that if there are more customers interested, she’s sure she can rustle up some other goodies to give away.

Olson said the events are quarterly, so the next event will be sometime in April.

“A fresh, new year presents a great opportunity to really check in on our health as families, and as communities,” Walmart Senior Vice President of Pharmacy Kevin Host said in the release. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’re able to offer through our Wellness Day events. These free screenings and affordable immunizations provide not only valuable insight but also valuable protection against illnesses that become common during the winter season.”

Walmart pharmacies have hosted these wellness days since 2014, the release said. Nationally, customers have received more than 5 million free health screenings for customers. More than 4,000 Walmart stores are in medically underserved areas, which means Walmart is often the first stop for health care in these rural and underserved communities.
