Chilly temps, snow chances return for New Year’s holiday weekend

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Chances are good that Gillette may see a snowy New Year as the world marches into 2023, but that’s after a warm end of the week.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota, says sun and warmth are on tap for today. The forecast high is 39 degrees under a sunny sky. Winds will come from the southwest at 10 to 17 mph with gusts reaching 24 mph. That’ll dip wind chills to about 10 degrees.

Clouds will roll in tonight as the low falls to around 24. Wind chills will ease some to 15 degrees as winds continue from the southwest at 11 to 13 mph.

Saturday will somewhat repeat today, albeit with more clouds in the sky. The forecast high is 40 degrees under partly sunny skies. Winds from the southwest are expected at 7 to 10 mph and will turn to come from the northwest in the afternoon, according to the forecast. Gusts could reach 15 mph.

Snow chances begin Saturday evening, starting low at 20% after 11 p.m. Otherwise the night will be mostly cloudy with a low near 25 and a west wind of 6 mph.

New Year’s Day will see a 50% chance for snow under cloudy skies. The forecast calls for a high of 34 as winds come from the northwest at 6 to 10 mph with gusts reaching 15 mph. Snow remains likely, up to 60% chance, Sunday night as the low falls to around 22.

The 60% chance for snow continues into Monday, mostly before 11 a.m. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a high near 29 degrees. Snow chances fall off Monday night. Forecast highs throughout the week are in the mid- to high 20s with overnight lows between 11 and 14 degrees.
