Barrasso pushes for energy independence in Wyoming at the Rockies Petroleum Conference

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Sen. John Barrasso wants Washington, D.C. to leave Wyoming’s energy sector alone.

That stance was among the senator’s talking points Thursday as he spoke to representatives of the state’s oil and gas industry in Wyoming at the Rockies Petroleum Conference in Cheyenne.

Barrasso said that during the Trump administration the United States was energy independent.

“Not just energy independent, but energy dominant. Trump, Pence took us from energy independence to energy dominance. Taxes were low, inflation did not exist, and energy was a lot more affordable,” he said.

“Energy is called the national resource for a reason,” Barrasso continued. “It is a force multiplier. We are a world energy superpower. And we ought to act like we are.”

The senator said Wyoming has the capability to succeed as an energy hot spot among the states, but the Cowboy State is being held back by “an administration that is at war with American energy.”

“We have a president from day number one to put a target on the back of American energy,” Barrasso said. “Joe Biden has gone to Vladimir Putin in Russia before Russia invaded Ukraine. He’s gone to Iran. He’s gone to Venezuela, as well as Saudi Arabia, to say ‘please make more oil, send it to the United States.’ We have it here and the people in this room do it in a much more environmentally friendly way and respectful way and responsible way than any of those other countries do.”

Barrasso said the companies present are supported by the state of Wyoming, and he will fight for them and their jobs and resources.
