C17 Crime Clips for Friday, Aug. 12

GILLETTE, Wyo.- Here is a brief summary of all things crime that happened in and around Gillette yesterday, obtained through law enforcement reports from the Gillette Police Department (GPD) and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

Burglary, Aug. 11, Kirk Street, GPD

A 66-year-old man called the police at 9:30 a.m. yesterday after he reportedly noticed thousands of dollars missing from an unlocked safe inside his residence on Kirk Street, according to Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson. The man told officers that $15,000 to $30,000 was missing from the safe. There were no signs of forced entry into the home, and the theft is believed to have occurred between Aug. 4 and Aug. 8, per Wasson. There are no suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.

Suspicious activity, Aug. 11, S. 4-J Road, GPD

A 36-year-old woman turned in parts to a 9mm handgun yesterday at 10:55 a.m. because she could no longer see the serial number on them, Wasson said. The woman was a resident at the Waystation on S. 4-J Road, where staff requested police presence after the firearm was reported to them by another resident, per Wasson, who said firearms are not allowed in the facility. No further action was taken.

Vehicle theft, Aug. 11, Highway 14-16, GPD

Staff at Rent-A-Wreck called the police at 1:30 p.m. to report one of their vehicles had been stolen after being rented to a 35-year-old woman, Wasson said. The vehicle, a 2019 Ford Truck, had been rented out to the woman on July 27, and staff have been unable to contact her.

Property destruction, Aug. 11, Hannum Road, CCSO

A 62-year-old man called the sheriff’s office at 2:04 p.m. after he found the mirror on his Dodge Caravan broken off in a trailer park on Hannum Road, according to Campbell County Sheriff Scott Matheny. The damage was estimated to be under $1,000, and the man reported seeing trailer park residents walking near his van recently. The investigation is ongoing.

Assault, Aug. 11, Warlow Drive, GPD

Officers cited an 18-year-old man for assault and reckless driving after he reportedly hit a 43-year-old man’s face after being told to leave the BMX track on Warlow Drive around 7 p.m., Wasson said. The 43-year-old man had abrasions on his face and told police the 18-year-old had sped through the parking lot.

Drugs, Aug. 11, W. Lakeway Road, GPD

Three teenagers were reportedly found with a misdemeanor amount of marijuana and tobacco during a traffic stop on a 1997 Subaru at W. Lakeway Road and S. Burma Avenue last night around 10:32 p.m., Wasson said. The driver, a 15-year-old boy, was cited for possession of tobacco and driving without a license. Two female passengers, one 15 and the other 14, were cited for possession of tobacco and marijuana. All three juveniles were found to have left home without permission and all of their parents were contacted, Wasson said.
