C17 Crime Clips for Wednesday, Aug. 10

GILLETTE, Wyo.- Here is a brief summary of all things crime that happened in and around Gillette yesterday, obtained through law enforcement reports from the Gillette Police Department (GPD) and the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

Blackmail, Aug. 9, W. Boxelder Road, CCSO

A 40-year-old man called the sheriff’s office yesterday at 10:09 a.m.to report falling victim to a nude photo social media scam from a woman claiming to be from Glenrock, Campbell County Sheriff Scott Matheny said. The man said he was contacted by an Ashley Miller via Facebook Messenger and, after talking for a time, they exchanged explicit photos. The woman then demanded he pay her money, or she would send the photos to his family and employer. He sent her $500, then disputed the charges to his bank card after she demanded even more money and reported the incident, Matheny said.

Check fraud, Aug. 9, Meadow Rose Avenue, GPD

Officers took a report from 30-year-old man at 10:20 a.m. who claimed he had been given a fraudulent check for $7,100 to repair or replace a roof, according to Gillette Deputy Police Chief Brent Wasson. The investigation is ongoing.

Property destruction, Aug. 9, Flying Circle Drive, GPD

The city arborist called the police yesterday after finding a number of trees in Kiwanis Park had been limbed without her approval, resulting in $250 in damage, according to Wasson. The damage is believed to have occurred between July 27 and Aug. 9 with witnesses reporting they saw a man they thought was city employee cutting the tree limbs with a chainsaw. The investigation is ongoing.

Drugs, Aug. 9, Brooks Avenue, GPD

Officers responded to the Brooks Street Inn yesterday around 1:54 p.m. after staff reported marijuana odor coming from a room on the first floor, Wasson said. An 18-year-old man was contacted and gave consent to search. Officers located marijuana and alcohol in the room. The man was cited for possession of a controlled substance and possessing alcohol under 21.

Crash, Aug. 9, Running W Drive, GPD

A 48-year-old woman was cited for improper lookout after she reportedly caused a crash that resulted in a 54-year-old woman being transported to the emergency room around 4:57 p.m., Wasson said. The 48-year-old woman, driving a 2013 Ford, reportedly struck the older woman in a 2015 Buick while entering a parking lot on Running W. Drive. The crash resulted in over $1,000 in damage. The 54-year-old was transported to the hospital for abdomen pain, Wasson said.
