GILLETTE, Wyo. — While the Campbell County Fair on Wednesday announced on Facebook that it has to cancel its long-held pig wrestling event for this year, organizers are preparing other options and lining up dozens of other family-friendly activities.
Coordinator Liz Edwards confirmed that the contractor they typically work with isn’t able to provide the roughly 70 pigs of a few different sizes that are involved in the event that has been part of the fair since at least 2013. She said it’s sad to have to cancel the event since it’s always been a fun event for the community to watch and to participate in.
“We have worked diligently with our contractor for many years and have had very successful shows,” Campbell County Fair said in a Facebook post. “Due to the current economy, our contractor is unable to provide livestock for events. The Fair Board is coming together to look for other solutions or for an alternate event. We will send out updates as they become available.”
Edwards said that she is open to county community members’ suggestions for other entertainment options, and the Fair Board would make the decisions. Anyone with substantive recommendations can call her at 307-687-0200.
Nevertheless, everything else is going as planned, Edwards said.
The fair will start out on July 30 with the Red, White and Blue charity barbecue for the local VFW hall. Other planned entertainment for the fair includes stage bands, a petting zoo, NASCAR mini cars, a train, a bubble tower, Grand Illusions by the Blooms, a hypnotist, a ranch rodeo, and monster trucks. Youths who participate in 4-H will present their show pigs. There will also be a static exhibits, such as ceramics and photography.
