Sexual abuse charges dropped for Gillette man accused of indecent exposure

GILLETTE, Wyo.— A Gillette police officer who arrested a man for exposing himself outside a local pizzeria chose not to charge him with sexual abuse of a minor, the Campbell County Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday.

Corey Donovan Barker, 51, is currently charged with three counts of misdemeanor indecent exposure after the arresting officer reportedly chose not to pursue three counts of felony third-degree sexual abuse of a minor, Campbell County Attorney Mitch Damsky said on May 20.

Barker was arraigned on May 19 before Circuit Court Judge Wendy Bartlett, of the Sixth Judicial District, court records indicate, during which he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

“It’s officer discretion,” Damsky explained when asked if his office dropped the charges, adding that Bartlett told Barker he was very lucky the officer chose not to pursue charges for sexually abusing a minor.

The charges against Barker stem from a May 17 incident where he was arrested after police received multiple reports he was exposing and touching himself outside Pizza Carrello around 1:35 p.m., according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.

A Gillette police detective reportedly observed Barker grabbing his crotch area and touching himself, per the affidavit, which adds that Barker was seen by three children and two adults who were having lunch inside the restaurant.

While en route, officers received two other independent reports saying the same thing about Barker; that a man in green shorts was touching himself outside the restaurant, the affidavit states.

Barker denied everything when officers confronted him and began yelling and using profane language before being taken into custody.

The affidavit and Campbell County Detention Center arrest records both show Barker was originally charged with three counts each of indecent exposure and felony third-degree sexual abuse of a minor.
