One dead in motorcycle crash southwest of Buffalo

An Evansville man died Monday following a motorcycle crash southwest of Buffalo on Highway 16, the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) said Sept. 8.

Thomas Hammell, 60, has been identified as the operator of a 2015 Indian Chieftain that was traveling westbound on Highway 16 around 10:16 a.m., per WHP.

Hammell attempted to negotiate a sharp curve and crossed the centerline, colliding head-on with a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a Gillette resident, WHP says, adding that Hammell was not wearing a helmet and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Gillette resident and his three passengers, including two juveniles, were not injured in the crash.

The WHP is investigating speed on the part of Hammell as a potential contributing factor.

Hammell is the 79th fatality on Wyoming’s roadways in 2021, compared to 87 in 2020, 110 in 2019, and 75 in 2018 to date, per WHP.
