At least one adult male is in custody following an investigation into two shootings that occurred in Gillette within the last 48 hours, Gillette Police Lt. Brent Wasson said Tuesday.
Wasson, citing an ongoing investigation on July 20, declined to specify exactly what charges the male, 31, could be facing in addition to his level of involvement with an alleged shooting on South Emerson Avenue Sunday morning and another on Warlow Drive Monday.
The South Emerson Avenue incident was reported at 4:20 a.m. July 18 where a citizen told police that several adults were causing a disturbance at a nearby residence. The citizen also reported hearing the sound of a gunshot, Wasson said.
“There was a dispute and an adult male discharged a single round from a handgun,” Wasson continued, adding that no one was injured and that the dispute was possibly over several missing firearms from the South Emerson Ave.
The second alleged shooting occurred shortly before 3:44 a.m. July 19 where multiple shots were fired into an occupied apartment yesterday morning, per Wasson, who added that an adult male in the apartment was not injured.
Witnesses were identified and reported that the suspect, or suspects, fled the area in an unidentified vehicle before officers arrived, he said.
During the course of the investigation, Wasson continued, officers learned that the male resident was associated in some manner with the South Emerson Avenue incident, though he did not specify how.
Officers and detectives executed a search warrant in relation to this case in the Prairie Rose subdivision and the 31-year-old male was arrested shortly thereafter.
Arrest records obtained from the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office state that the 31-year-old male was charged with being a felon in possession of or using a firearm and attempted second-degree murder.
Wasson, however, advised that no official decision on charges had been made at the time of press.
“One of our detectives will be meeting with prosecutors later this morning to decide on charges,” he said.
As of July 20, the shootings remain active investigations and additional information will be released when it comes available.
Editors note: a previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the 31-year-old male was arrested in connection to the Warlow Drive incident. The Gillette Police Department has not specified yet which incident the 31-year-old male is involved in nor the exact nature of the charges filed against him, per GPD Lt. Brent Wasson.
