At their meeting today, Campbell County Commissioners approved an open burning restriction on all non-federal lands in the county. The restriction becomes effective immediately.

Due to extreme drought and dry conditions throughout Campbell County, and all of Wyoming, the restrictions will remain in place until they are rescinded in the future.

Under the restrictions, fireworks and outdoor fires are prohibited in unimproved areas with the following exceptions:

  • Trash or refuse fires inside approved containers with spark arresters between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Charcoal fires within enclosed grills
  • Acetylene cutting torches and electric arc welders in cleared areas
  • Chainsaws that have spark arresters
  • All exceptions require the proper clearing of a radius of grasses and other flammable materials around the container or activity

Additional exceptions are provided for fire and law enforcement and an exception was granted for the Campbell County Parks & Recreation Department to provide its annual July 4th fireworks display.

Commissioners also rescinded a previously approved resolution that allowed for the sale and use of fireworks in Campbell County for a few weeks this summer. That stay on the county’s ongoing fireworks ban was contingent upon weather and fire conditions and the Campbell County Fire Warden and Chief of the Fire Department recommended removing the stay.

A detailed copy of the draft resolution that was approved, including specifics on the exceptions, is included below.
