The Campbell County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees held a special meeting Thursday evening where they voted unanimously to keep Campbell County’s schools closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
The decision came following a statement from Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow, issued Thursday regarding the tentative reopening of schools throughout the state.
“School districts have implemented their Adapted Learning Plans, approved by the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE),” Balow said in the release from WDE Thursday. “These plans are authorized for use until the end of the school year, if needed.”
Within the current health orders, per the release, an opportunity exists for districts to work with their county health officials to open school buildings to some students on a limited basis for in-person instruction. For example, IEPs for students with special needs, career and technical education and small group reading intervention is allowed provided social distancing, hygiene and enhanced sanitation efforts are practiced and Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Wyoming Department of Health guidelines followed.
“The health and safety of students, staff and the community are of primary importance,” Balow said. “”In the coming days, my staff and I will provide guidance to school districts including a template for reopening schools.”
CCSD Superintendent Alex Ayers will be engaging in regular and ongoing conversations with Campbell County Public Health officials to develop a district-specific plan for reopening schools in the fall, per the instruction of WDE.
During the special meeting, the Board also decided to cancel prom. Additionally, they choose to table the idea of hosting a virtual graduation ceremony for graduating seniors in May and said CCSD high school graduation ceremonies will be postponed until a later date this summer, with Westwood High School graduation tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 26, and Campbell County, Thunder Basin and Wright high schools scheduled for Saturday, June 27.
