A scammer, impersonating an FBI agent, was able to successfully obtain $3,000 from a Gillette man, according to an incident reported to the Gillette Police Department (GPD) earlier this week.
A 30-year-old man told police he had been contacted over the phone by a scammer who claimed to be with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The man was instructed by the caller to obtain a $2,000 Target gift card from Smith’s grocery store and a $1,000 gift card from Walmart in order to “verify funds” or he would face criminal charges, GPD Lt. Brent Wasson said.
The man purchased the gift cards and provided their information to the scammer. While still on the phone call, the man approached law enforcement to verify that it was actually the FBI on the other end of the line. However, it was not.
Police noted the male scammer, who eventually hung up, had a Middle Eastern accent.
GPD later determined that the funds had already been removed from the gift cards and were unable to be recovered.
