Gillette College Mourns Loss of Beloved Instructor
The halls of Gillette College were somber yesterday as faculty and students were notified of the untimely passing of John McGuire, Director of Business Education. The details of his death have not yet been released by the family, according to Vice President Janell Oberlander, who spoke reverently about John’s role on campus and with his students.
“He will be dearly missed,” Oberlander said. “John was a treasured member of our Gillette College family and the community.”
McGuire had been with the college for about eight years, Oberlander said, where he headed up the Business Education Department, teaching classes in international business, entrepreneurship and management. Prior to teaching, he worked for 10 years on Wall Street for The Bank of New York and the Chase Manhattan Bank, according to his bio on the college website. He also spent a stint in Russia between 1993 to 2007, the period in which the communist country converted to its current modified capitalism.
McGuire received his MBA from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in Economics from Indiana University, with overseas study at Leningrad State University, Sophia University in Tokyo, and in Spain. Last year, he was awarded the 2018 Post-Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Wyoming Business Education Association (WBEA).
He loved teaching, Oberlander said, and one of his daughters shared with her how much he loved his students and teaching at Gillette College.
“He was an integral member of our campus family and the community,” Oberlander said. “He will be sorely missed.”
Further updates will be posted to MyNWCCD and the Gillette College Facebook page as they become available. The college is offering counseling services to faculty, staff and students.
