On Saturday afternoon, the Gillette Police Department received a report of fraud from a 29-year-old male. The man said he had transferred $2,000, via PayPal, to a 52-year-old male for a security deposit on a house in the 700 block of Ruger Court in Gillette.
“I would be skeptical of sending any amount of cash to anyone over the internet without checking backgrounds and resources first,” GPD Detective Sgt. Eric Dearcorn said.
The 29-year-old was supposed to take occupancy of the home on Nov. 1, but the 52-year-old man then told him he required two months’ rent up front, according to Dearcorn.
The 29-year-old male then became suspicious. When he checked the ownership of the property, he found that it belonged to a 33-year-old male, not the 52-year-old.
The GPD report did not specify on which site the alleged fraudulent listing was posted. The investigation is ongoing.
