Golden Trout Spawning Operation Underway
The Story Hatchery will be spawning golden trout Wednesdays in June and the public is invited to view the operation between 9 and 11 a.m.
The hatchery is the only facility in the nation with a captive population of adult golden trout for egg production. Golden trout have complex water temperature requirements that make egg collection and hatchery rearing from wild stocks difficult.
Golden trout females produce between 300 and 700 eggs each year, and the approximately 250,000 eggs collected each year at the Story Hatchery are primarily used for fish stocking in Wyoming’s high mountain lakes. This year some eggs will also be shipped to Colorado, Idaho, Washington, and California.
The Story Hatchery is located at 311 Fish Hatchery Rd.
