Your Local Spot for Garden Décor, Farm & Ranch Essentials
H/t Charity Stewart
Driving by the Goven/Thar’s Farm & Ranch Supply storefront off Burma Road, you’re more likely to notice the brightly-colored metal yard décor than the new name on the signage.
After managing Thar’s for 14 years, Jessica Goven purchased the business in October of 2017, when Gary Thar retired.
“We kept the name, but changed it a little, because a business that’s been here for 40-plus years, you don’t change,” Jessica explained.
This time of year, she’s staying busy. Grass seed is just one of the hot commodities. As always, they stock reclamation and garden seed, fencing supplies, and a wide variety of tack, livestock feeds, supplements, and supplies. Basically, Goven Thar’s is a locally owned and operated one-stop shop for everything Ag-related.
Jessica admitted she was a little worried how customers might respond to the change in ownership after so many years as a staple in the community. But she said the transition has been nothing but smooth sailing, bragging her customers have always been great.
She’s added a few new product lines here and there too, to keep up with trends and demand, including metal yard décor added last summer.
Jessica said she met the vendor while following her teenage daughter to a rodeo event in Huron, South Dakota. It’s just one of the many ways the synchronicity of balancing all the various moving pieces of her world has worked out. The flowers are perfect, and are both decorative and nearly deer-proof, she said.
“The deer will not eat them,” she said. “But, they could potentially pack them off.”
Otherwise, Goven’s is still carrying on all the same traditions of the past, and she’s amused when people walk into the store exclaiming, “I didn’t even know this store existed.”
