The only occupant of a home that caught fire Tuesday night on Ninth Street, was a 3-year-old beagle.
The Campbell County Fire Department and Gillette Police Department (CCFD) responded to the 800 block of E. Ninth Street shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report of a residential structure fire. When they arrived four minutes later, smoke was already billowing from the residence.
Gillette Police Lt. Brent Wasson said the 34-year-old female homeowner confirmed that there were no people in the residence.
Fire fighters made entry, extinguished the fire, and searched the home for occupants. Fire fighters found the beagle and attempted live-saving measures. However, the dog did not survive.
According to a press release from CCFD, the fire was contained to the living room. However, there was extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the home.
The homeowner was displaced by the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation.
